Overview

The Office Open XML format specification has been approved as a free and open Ecma International standard. A newer improved version is approved as an ISO/IEC standard.

The OpenXML Document Viewer project is an outcome of the feedback from participants of a series of Document Interoperability Initiative workshops. The main goal of the OpenXML Document Viewer project is to create software tools, plus guidance, showing how documents created using Open XML Format can be translated to HTML. As a result, Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), Solutions Integrators & Mobile Solution providers can use these tools to enable their customers view Open XML documents on heterogeneous platforms and browser applications. The OpenXML Viewer is available under the open source Microsoft Public License (MS-PL), which allows anyone to use the tools, submit bugs and feedback, or contribute to the project. We have chosen to use an Open Source development model that allows developers from all around the world to participate and contribute to the project.

Roadmap

Milestone1: November 2008 Community Technology Preview

For the first milestone, the focus of the project will be on building the core architectural components for the OpenXML to HTML translator that can be leveraged to build the plug-ins for various platforms to enable cross-platform support.

Overview

The Office Open XML format specification has been approved as a free and open Ecma International standard. A newer improved version is approved as an ISO/IEC standard.

The OpenXML Document Viewer project is an outcome of the feedback from participants of a series of Document Interoperability Initiative workshops. The main goal of the OpenXML Document Viewer project is to create software tools, plus guidance, showing how documents created using Open XML Format can be translated to HTML. As a result, Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), Solutions Integrators & Mobile Solution providers can use these tools to enable their customers view Open XML documents on heterogeneous platforms and browser applications. The OpenXML Viewer is available under the open source Microsoft Public License (MS-PL), which allows anyone to use the tools, submit bugs and feedback, or contribute to the project. We have chosen to use an Open Source development model that allows developers from all around the world to participate and contribute to the project.

We encourage you to view video demonstrations of the translation engine and the FireFox browser plug-ins.

Performance tuning for server-side scenario

The following documentation is available for the OpenXML Viewer plug-in and command line interface.

Installation Guidelines for Linux and Windows - This page contains the installation steps and details required to install the Firefox browser plugin add-on for Windows and Linux.
Functional overview of the OpenXMLViewer plugin - This page provides an overview of the basic use cases along with a screen action guide for using the browser plug-in.
Technical and architectural overview - The technical and architectural overview of the browser plug-in is present here. The architecture considers the usage of the core transformation from docx to html in non-browser and cross browser environments.

Testing

Testing was conducted on the application at different levels.

Functional Testing
At the functional level, the basic functionality was tested for correct reproduction of docx elements in HTML. Deviations and not supported features were identified and documented. The following documents were used to test the base functionality.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q. Where can I find the installation files?
A. Head over to the Releases section and select the latest release. The Windows installer is called OpenXMLViewerwinfirefox.xpi. The linux installer is called OpenXMLViewerlinuxfirefox.tar.

Q. I found some undocumented issues. What do I do about this?
A. You can log issues, suggestions, feedback in the Issue Tracker. We'd love to hear from you. So do provide your feedback. We look forward to this.

Q. I have installed the plug-in on Linux. The plug-in still does not show up in Firefox. What should I do?
A. The following steps may be required to get the plug-in to come up on Linux.
1. Ensure that the user has read permissions to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins directory
2. run the following script as the logged in user after shutting down firefox:
> ln -s /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/NPDOCX.so ~/.mozilla/plugins/NPDOCX.so

If the plugins folder does not exist in the ~/.mozilla folder, create the plugins folder and retry the above link.

3. Ensure that /usr/local/lib entry exists in /etc/ld.so.conf
4. Restart the OS and try again.

If the above steps donot work, please log an entry in the Issue Tracker with the details of Firefox version info and OS version info.

Q. Is there a linux uninstallation/cleanup script?
A. Run this script file from the commandline to cleanup the installation of the plugin/commandline application.

Installation Guidelines

This section contains installation information for the various platforms supported by the OpenXMLViewer project.
The installers are platform specific and follow the naming convention as below:
_<plugin name> _ <os> _ <browser>.<type>_

Eg. The Windows installer is called OpenXMLViewer _ win _ firefox.xpi.
For Linux, the same is called OpenXMLViewer_ linux _ firefox.xpi

The installers are packaged in a zip/tar file containing the above installers and supporting files/documentation.

Commandline utility installation

The installation files are named as below

Eg. The Windows installer is called OpenXMLViewer _ win _ cmd.xpi.
For Linux, the same is called OpenXMLViewer_ linux _ cmd.xpi.

The installers are packaged in a zip file containing the above installers and supporting files/documentation. The commandline interface is called OpenXMLViewer.exe on windows and OpenXMLViewer on linux.

MS Windows XP, Vista, 2003, 2008 Server

Extract the files from the zip to the required folder.

Linux

Root access/install permissions is required in order to install the files. Write access to /usr/local/lib and /usr/local/bin is required for the installation to be successful.
Download the tar archive and extract it to a local directory.

> tar –xvf OpenXMLViewer _ linux _ cmd.tar
> cd OpenXMLViewer _ linux _ cmd
> ./install.sh

This will install the files to /usr/local/lib and /usr/local/bin folders

Browser plug-in installation

MS Windows XP, Vista, 2003, 2008 Server

The OpenXML Viewer Firefox plug-in for MS Windows can be downloaded here

Extract the zip file to your local folder.
The zip file contains the Readme.txt, the License.txt file and the Firefox extension installer OpenXMLViewer _ win _ firefox.xpi.
Open the .xpi file using firefox. The codesigned plugin information is displayed on the screen, signed against MindTree Limited.

Click on the Install Now button.

Once the plugin is installed, firefox prompts for a restart. Restart firefox as prompted.
Once firefox is restarted, navigate to Tools>Add ons. In the extensions tab, OpenXMLViewer should be visible.

Linux

Prerequisites
Root access/install permissions is required in order to install the files. Write access to /usr/local/lib and /usr/lib/mozilla is required for the installation to be successful.

Download the tar archive and extract it to a local directory.

> tar –xvf OpenXMLViewer _ linux _ firefox.tar
